What is
fringing reef / barrier reef?

Two stages in a coral reef's relationship to a subsiding volcanic island: a fringing reef grows directly against the shoreline; as the island sinks and the reef grows upward to stay near the surface, it becomes a barrier reef, separated from the shrinking island by a lagoon.
